Following the institution’s drive towards providing human-centric academic programs, De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) rolled out Community-Based Action Projects Addressing Strategically-Themed Learning Objectives through Networked Environments (CAPSTONE) initiatives.
Through such, Integrated School students’ projects are already community-based, offering real-world solutions to real-world problems. Performance task guidelines have also been tweaked to become collaborative, integrative, multi- and inter-disciplinary.
CAPSTONE projects are now part of the IS curriculum, based on the Educational Innovation Framework recently developed to come up with a transformative approach to meet society’s most pressing needs. This framework shows how core values meet innovation – vital to DLSL as it fosters customer-centered services. Social innovation and soft skills development are likewise focal in this curriculum change, thereby emphasizing on “students’ engagement outside the classroom, treatment of education as a service to society, and as a support for students already in the 21st century.”
In coordination with the City Government of Lipa, DLSL partners assist the students in coming up with feasible and sustainable projects for various communities. Grades 4 to 8 will be conducting their CAPSTONE projects within the school, while Grades 9 to 12 will be deployed in various communities in Lipa. Students will then be determining their purpose, conducting research, coming up with possible solutions, planning, strategizing, and implementing their programs. Specific priority focus areas include education and literacy, health and sanitation, and livelihood and wealth creation. These and other considerations on community visits have been discussed to the students for the past two weeks to help them prepare for their projects.
Also paramount to project creation is the adoption of design thinking principles. By “putting oneself in others’ shoes” when developing solutions, a greater impact is expected.
