 What is Gawad Alumni?
De La Salle Lipa through the Office of the President for Alumni Linkages would like to share the Lasallian charism and to recognize the outstanding personal and professional achievements and contributions of its elementary, high school and college (including MMT) graduates by conferring them with the Blessed Brother Arnould Reche FSC Distinguished Alumni Award aka Gawad Alumni.
The award aims to give tribute to alumni who embody the Lasallian ideals of faith, service and community and to formally acknowledge their valuable contributions to the community at the local, regional, national or international level.
Nomination Nominations are open to alumni from elementary, high school or college graduates (including MMT) of DLSL and OLRA (for 1963 graduates only). Nominations may be made by any individual (alumnus/alumna, DLSL employee, employer, colleague, friend, former classmate or teacher, or enrolled student at DLSL) or alumni batch/class. A nominator may submit no more than three (3) nominees every award year.
In considering nominations for the award, the selection panel will use the following criteria:- Evidence of a broad, significant, and far-reaching impact in the community, province, region, nation or international community by witnessing to the Lasallian ideals of faith, service, and community. (Nominees do not have to be involved with the particular discipline from which they graduated.)
- Evidence of professional and personal development activities to enhance individual competencies since graduation from DLSL or OLRA (circa 1963 only).
- Evidence of integrity and competence and lives that foster patriotism, justice and sound moral and Lasallian values. Alumni previously nominated for the award may be re-nominated by qualified nominators.
Criteria and Mechanics
A maximum of seven (7) alumni/alumnae may be awarded every year. The following categories shall be considered in the nomination of outstanding alumni/alumnae:- Business, Commerce and Agriculture
- Church Involvement (lay, religious, diocesan), Community Service / Social Responsibility and Environment
- Government and Public Service
- Education
- Science, Technology and/or Research
- Sports, Arts and Culture
The awardees will be selected by a panel of judges created for the purpose initiated by the Office of the President. Nominators are excluded from serving on the selecting panel.
A seventh award, the President’s Special Award may be given to a member of the Alumni based on his/her active involvement with DLSL or upon the discretion of the DLSL President.
The following should be submitted by the nominating party for each nomination:- A filled up nomination form. One form for each nomination.
- A letter supporting the nominee stating the reason/s for the nomination in a particular award category. The testimony must not be more than two pages in length.
- A copy of the nominee´s Curriculum Vitae, if possible.
- Three (3) written, dated, and signed testimonials in support of the nomination coming from individuals not related to the nominee either in consanguinity or affinity.
All nomination requirements for a nomination must be mailed on or before 25 October 2012 and in a sealed envelope to:

Gawad Alumni Recipients
Edgardo S. Barcelona (HS ´64)
Science, Technology and Research, 2009
The first recipient of Blessed Br. Arnould Reche FSC Distinguished Alumni Award is Dr. Edgardo S. Barcelona of High School Batch 64. He took Bachelor of Science in Pre-Med at the University of the Philippines - Manila (1968) and Medicine at the same university (1972). Presently he is the Chief of Surgery of High Desert Medical Group (California, USA). During year 2000, he was accorded by the High Desert Medical Group with the Physician of the Year Award. He served as the president of the Society of Philippine Surgeons in America (SPSA) from 2005 to 2006 and is one of the founding members of the Br. Stephen Rabisa FSC Gift of Education which has more than 52 scholars at St. Br. Jaime Hilario Night High School and St. Br. Miguel Febres Cordero FSC Educational Community College Scholarship Programs.
Rogelio Basco (HS ´78)
Sports, Arts and Culture, 2010
He was given the award in recognition of his achievements in the field of arts and living the Lasallian ideals through sharing his expertise to different institutions. He is known for his expertise in visual arts (painting, sculpture, installation, etc.), music and dance.
He already had numerous one-man and group exhibitions in Lipa City, Manila, Makati City and even outside the country. In 2009, he showcased his artworks in Universitas Widyatama and at Universitas Katholik Parahyangan in Indonesia. Prior to his Indonesian trip, his two dance films won 1st and 2nd places at the WIFI Body 4 Independent Contemporary Dance Festival. His two entries beat other six local and international entries in the dance on screen category. Dance on screen is a fusion of modern contemporary dance and film. In 2008, he was accorded with Natatanging Lipeño Award for Visual Arts by the City Government of Lipa.
He took up Industrial Technology in DLSU. He returned to DLSL as classroom teacher in 1981. While teaching, he served as vocal coach / musical director of Maharimusik (1986 – 1991). Under his leadership, the group staged several original musicales. At present, he is the choreographer of Integrated School´s Danz Zone, a dance group born from the back-up dancers of Maharimusik. Since 2001, he is DLSL´s Art Coordinator. He is an active member of Art Association of the Philippines, Society of Philippine Sculptors and Lipa City Culture and Arts Council.
Dr. Benito P. Atienza (HS ´79)
Science, Technology and Research, 2012
Dr. Atienza is a well-known and trusted pediatrician in Batangas. He along with his colleagues, established Bulilit (Child) Community Health Workers Foundation, the first ever child-to-child program to be registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
From its creation in 1999, the foundation has already spread to other provinces such as Laguna, Cavite, Bulacan, Quezon, Pampanga and Gen. Santos to name a few. To date, around 2,000 school children and hundreds of teachers and mothers have taken part in the training.
From a founder, to achiever. Since the establishment of his foundation, not only did he receive praises and compliments, he was likewise honored in 2004 and 2009 by the Dr. José P. Rizal Memorial Awards of the Philippine Medical Association in the community leadership category for founding and spearheading the Foundation. In 2005, he was named one of the Caring Physicians of the World by the World Medical Association. And the list goes on. In 2009, he was one of the honorees of The Outstanding Filipino Physicians by JCI Senate Philippine. In 2010, he received an Achievement Award from De La Salle Health Sciences Institute. And these are only a few of his awards from a long list of achievements.
Jose Francisco Q. Cifra (HS ´72)
Church Involvement, Community Service / Social Responsibility and Environment, 2012
He is the Senior Asst. Vice Pres. of China Banking Corporation. The multi-awarded Rotarian has been honored for his "vision to bring water to the thirsty, food to the hungry, medical attention to the sick, education to the illiterate and clothing for the needy" with the approval of his proposal known as the Rotary Gawad Kalinga Village-Brookside.
Today 300 homes make up the Rotary Gawad Kalinga Village-Brookside, which shelters the city’s poorest of the poor. Over the years, Rotary conducted pediatric and adult tuberculosis treatment programs, vocational trainings, organization of a Rotary Community Corps, medical-dental missions, book donation, mass wedding, deep well drilling and construction of a water purification station, projects for sanitation and upkeep of the environment and a host of other activities for the community’s order and beauty and the residents´ well-being.
In recognition of his rare passion for service and unbending commitment to excellence, he was accorded honor and praise on the club, district, and international levels. The Rotary Club of Loyola Heights presented him with the Most Outstanding Baby Rotarian Award in 2002 and the Most Outstanding Rotarian Award in 2003, 2006, and 2010. Rotary International District 3780 recognized him as the Most Outstanding President in 2004, the Most Outstanding District Officer in 2005 and the Most Outstanding Rotarian in 2006.
MGEN. TRISTAN M. KISON (HS ´72)
Government and Public Service, 2012
He is "in command of all AFP Forces in the National Capital Region as Commanding General of the NCRCOM and plays a big role in protecting the seat of government." He attributed his achievements to the Lasallian ideals of "teaching minds, touching hearts and transforming lives."
His first assignment was in Sulu where he prevented the bloodshed of two warring factions, equipped with high-powered guns and 81 mm mortars. He successfully upheld his conviction of preserving life. In 2003, he became a Battalion Commander of the 1st Infantry Battalion in Laguna and the 4th District of Quezon. He was responsible for the seizure of at least 20 trucks of illegally cut logs and the closure of no less than four saw mills.
In 2004, typhoon "Winnie" ravaged Real, Infanta and Gen Nakar, Quezon, leaving behind 607 dead, 395 missing and 566 injured. Seeing the devastation, he knew they could not afford to wait for the national government to extend help. Using his meager resources, he immediately set up an evacuation center and a temporary hospital with his own military doctors.
After his stint in Quezon, he was designated to be the AFP´s Public Information Officer until his career took on a whole new level when he dabbled in diplomacy and international relations. In 2000, he was posted as the Defense and Armed Forces Attaché to the Republic of Singapore. After one year in the post, he was awarded Outstanding Defense and Armed Forces Attaché Post of the Year. When he came back to the Philippines in 2003, he was assigned as the Camp Commander of Fort Bonifacio. He aspired to instill the same level of order and discipline in the metropolis´ military base and became instrumental in making Fort Bonifacio the way it is now.
Our awardee has received six Distinguished Service Stars, eight Military Merit Medals, 25 Military Commendation Medals, a Gawad sa Kaunlaran Award and countless other commendations.
