Senior BS Accountancy (BSA) students Kenneth Maloles, Hannah Pren, Angelica Mitra, and Hana Michelle Montealto, dubbed as Team Maven, made De La Salle Lipa proud as they competed against five other finalists for the 3rd Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Global Business Challenge (GBC), June 1, at the Century Park Hotel, Manila.
The CIMA GBC is an annual international business challenge among Accountancy students. The said competition involves 22 countries, wherein each country chooses its delegates from a local finals level. Out of the 28 participating schools in the country, Team Maven, along with Team Green Archers from De La Salle University (DLSU) – Manila, The Patriots from DLSU – Dasmariñas, Scions Consulting from University of the Philippines (UP) – Visayas, Team Prism from University of San Carlos, and finalists from University of Cebu- Lapu-lapu and Mandaue, made it to the final round.
The challenge kicked off during the second semester of AY 2011-2012. This year´s case is about VYP Productions Limited, a company specializing in television program production. The participants were asked to submit their entries last March. By April of this year, the shortlisted participants, who will pitch against each other come June 1, were announced.
The finalists defended their paper in front of a prominent roster of judges, namely Jeremy Nasrulhaq, chief judge and divisional deputy president of CIMA Malaysia; Cilette Liboro, chief operating officer (COO) of ABS-CBN News Channel; Celso Dimarucut, CPA, senior vice president (VP) and group chief finance officer of Mediaquest Holdings, Inc.; Mary Jane Rosales, CPA, CIA, CCSA, a professional development consultant; Ma. Victoria Espano, managing partner and COO of Punongbayan & Araullo; and Corazon Picache De Jesus, assistant VP of GMA Network, Inc.
Team Patriots from DLSU-Dasmariñas emerged as the local champion. They will be competing against 21 other international teams on July 23-24 to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka. DLSU-Manila and UP-Visayas placed second and third, respectively.
Team Maven´s mentors, Ms. Maria Jamillah Punay and Ms. Renillyn Falceso, were more than proud and pleased on the team´s performance. Punay quipped, "It´s like they have transformed right before my eyes." When asked on what they think were the assets of Team Maven, Punay said, "Confidence, practice, preparation, and camaraderie."
The team underwent tedious preparation right after their internship last summer. Aside from polishing their case synopsis and visual presentation, Team Maven also had mock defenses aided by the College of Business, Economics, Accountancy and Management faculty.
"CIMA GBC taught me how to think, decide and act like a business leader," said one of Team Maven´s members Kenneth Maloles. Hana Montealto added, "CIMA developed both my technical ability and professional capacity." The competition indeed took the finalists to new heights.
In order to prepare the next batch of participants for the CIMA GBC, selected junior BSA students were invited to watch the national competition. Moreover, Punay disclosed that they are planning to empower oral and presentation skills among younger year levels.
