Criteria in the Selection of Deans

With the restructuring of the Tertiary School of De La Salle Lipa into independent colleges, the management tasks imposed on deans have increased substantially. Deans must be accountable to the Vice-Chancellor for Academics and Research for academic matters within their colleges. Further, Deans must stand to the faculty in the same relationship as a head stands to his department; they are accountable to the faculty and therefore are expected to consult and cooperate with the latter but must at the same time display the ability to act.

In this sense, the procedure for the appointment of deans must ensure that the deans have the confidence of the members of top administration and fellow deans, and the confidence of heads of departments and members of the faculty concerned.

In appointing deans, De La Salle Lipa will seek an individual who:

  1. Preferably holds an earned doctorate degree in the area of academic competency, except in those professional areas where less than an earned doctorate is generally considered to be a terminal degree
  2. Has a minimum of three years of demonstrably successful teaching experience or equivalent experience
  3. Is a scholar of note and hold credibility among the academic peers; has exhibited distinction in research, publications, participation in professional organizations and/or related professional activities
  4. Has demonstrated academic leadership ability and has exhibited the ability to work well with people
  5. Demonstrates emotional stability especially under stressful condition; shows high EQ and people skills
  6. Is able to plan effectively, inspire and innovate
  7. Has a strategic vision for the faculty and for the role of the faculty within the institution
  8. Has proven management skill; has shown potential administrative ability, preferably has served a term of appointment as Department Chair
  9. Has attended Lasallian formation program sponsored by the Institute of the Christian Brothers (De La Salle Brothers)
  10. Displays adequate pastoral skills.

It is clear that the duties of the Dean are such that both administrative ability and academic leadership, together with broad vision and objectivity, are prerequisites.
