Guidelines for the DLSL Wireless ResNet
 :: Introduction
This page contains the basics of what one needs in order to connect to the DLSL Residential Network (ResNet) using wireless technology, commonly known as WiFi.

The
ISD has deployed a number of 802.11 b/g wireless access points in the campus. With the proper hardware, you can connect to the Internet while roaming covered areas. Wireless connectivity can be a great convenience but is by no means meant to replace our Ethernet (wired) Internet connection. Wireless networks by their nature are unreliable and slower than their wired counterparts. We ask you to enjoy DLSL’s wireless network, but not to rely on it for essential Internet connectivity.

This page is provided as a simple guide to attain wireless connectivity for Windows users. While the examples in this document are for Windows 2000, you should find the process similar for Windows XP and Windows 98.
 :: Things To Consider
  In order to access the DLSL Wireless ResNet, you will need:

  1. For devices without WiFi hardware, you will need a wireless interface (WiFi adapter or add-on card), the most common being a PCMCIA card (a 1/8” thick card that plugs into a slot of your laptop). These devices also come in USB standard, generally in the form of a dongle (a little box or stick that protrudes from the computer).
  2. Available signal
  3. SSID
  4. WEP Key
  5. ResNet User Account

Many of the newer laptops come with a built-in wireless connection card – but not always. Most laptops Pentium M and Celeron M laptops will do.

If you do not have a wireless connectivity device, you will need to purchase any device that provides 802.11b or 802.11g wireless card. Many of these cards come bundled with a suite of software. It is recommended that you install this software for your computer to work to its full wireless potential.
