Two notable Supreme Court magistrates, namely, Justice Arturo D. Brion and Justice Jose Catral Mendoza, are set to join the Corps of Professors of the De La Salle Lipa College of Law starting SY 2017-2018. Their presence bolsters an already formidable line up of law professors who possess sterling qualifications not only in the legal and judicial professions but also in the academe.
Justice Arturo D. Brion, who recently retired from the Highest Court, emerged as no. 1 / the topnotcher in the 1974 Bar Examinations after graduating as Cum Laude and Class Valedictorian at the Ateneo Law School. Thenceforth, Justice Brion’s work experience involved stints in various leadership capacities in the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branches of government as well as in private law practice. Justice Brion intends to hold special lectures at DLSL College of Law.
On the other hand, Justice Jose Catral Mendoza hails from Fernando Air Base, Lipa City. He graduated from De La Salle Lipa in 1963 during that serendipitous time when the school was transitioning from the Our Lady of the Rosary Academy (now known as Canossa Academy, Lipa City) to the actual foundation of De La Salle Lipa in 1962. Justice Mendoza is a recipient of the Gawad Alumni for Outstanding Government and Public Service from the Office of the President of this school. After graduation from the San Beda College of Law, he engaged in private practice before making the inevitable upward journey from being an Executive Judge at the Regional Trial Court of Sta. Cruz, Laguna and then in Quezon City, then as an Associate Justice of the Court of Appeals, and finally as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. He is set to retire from the Highest Court on Aug. 13, 2017. A prime supporter of the DLSL College of Law; Justice Mendoza regularly donates his personal copies of the much respected Philippine Reports to the College of Law Library, where his growing collection occupies pride of place.
