De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) supported the 25th Philippine National Autism Consciousness Week themed “1Bansa, 1 Pangako” which kicked off on Monday, January 18, and celebrated until the 24th.
For its part, DLSL showed videos during its virtual flag-raising ceremony via the school’s official Facebook page.
The celebration aimed to encourage different government agencies and the private sector to start the week with an online flag ceremony promoting awareness on autism as a human condition. Likewise, it sought to inspire action by institutions geared towards autism-inclusive policies and procedures.
Autism is considered a “complex and lifelong developmental exceptionality, which challenges an individual’s ability to communicate, socialize and adapt to the world around him. This spectrum condition manifests uniquely in different persons. It is a variation of the human condition affecting approximately 1.2 million Filipinos and needs the acceptance, accommodation, and appreciation of normal persons.”
Incidentally, individuals with autism are sometimes referred to as having a world of their own or “sariling mundo.” Hence, the goal of this program is to provide love without discrimination to these persons.
Here are some social media comments from responsible netizens about autism and this advocacy. “They deserved to be loved. Mas lalo ninyo pang gawing makulay ang mundo ng mga nakapaligid sa inyo. Salamat sa adbokasiyang ito.”
Another netizen says, “Mahalin natin ang mga taong nakapaligid, may autism man o wala. Gawin natin masaya ang isa’t isa.”
A third comment goes like this, “Just like other kids with ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism, they deserved to be loved and pay attention to them. They need a lot of understanding and we as normal persons should respect them and have the patience to understand what they need on how they interact with others.”
All participating government offices and private entities prepared and showed a video via Facebook Live on their respective pages with several elements. These include the Philippine National Anthem which features individuals on the autism spectrum; the 1Pangako pledge; and, a message from a top executive on the significance of the National Autism Consciousness Week.
De La Salle Lipa joined several private institutions and NGOs such as the Autism Society Philippines, ASEAN Autism Network, SM Cares, NORFIL Foundation, and the Leonard Cheshire Disability Philippines Foundation. Among the local government units are Marikina, Caloocan, Mandaluyong, Taguig, and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).
