World Environment Day is the most renowned day for environmental action. Since 1974, it has been celebrated every year on 5 June: engaging governments, businesses, celebrities and citizens to focus their efforts on a pressing environmental issue.
This year, the theme is biodiversity – a concern that is both urgent and existential. Recent events, from bushfires in Brazil, the United States, and Australia to locust infestations across East Africa – and now, a global disease pandemic – demonstrate the interdependence of humans and the webs of life, in which they exist.
As such, De La Salle Lipa joins the whole world in celebrating this special day. Recognizing the potential to educate its network of 10,000 students towards responsible stewardship of the environment, DLSL made a commitment to reduce wastes generated from its activities and processes by having the campaign on banning single-use plastic bottled water and beverages. The reduction in plastic wastes (DLSL has successfully brought down between 50% and 80% relative to a base of 4,066 kg per year in AY 2016-2017) addresses the concern to shift to more sustainable consumption practices and to maintain an environment that is conducive for protecting the earth’s biodiversity resources.
In this regard, we encourage everyone to become sensitive of the societal needs and have a unified outlook on how to address the challenges in taking care of our nature, have the drive to change our consumption habits and be mindful of the waste we produce.
It’s time to do away with our “Throwaway Culture”! It’s our responsibility to protect the environment. Remember, it starts with you. It’s a commitment, a lifestyle change.
